--- Adorable hipster director Cary Fukunaga will make that sci-fi movie Spaceless next, which was a rumor a few weeks back. Two movies down - Sin Nombre and Jane Eyre - ad I'll follow the dude anywhere.--- Thrones Keepers - Some casting news for A Game of Thrones: they've cast Theon Greyjoy's sister Asha (although she can't be named Asha in the TV series because of that whore character Osha they invented for the show, so now she's called Yara, because none of us need any more complications when it comes to this show) and Xaro Xhoan Daxos, a kingly dude that Dany deals with. I'm not familiar with either actors at first glance, but the show's shown itself pretty dang good at picking the right actors so far.
--- Recent Piranha remaker Alexandre Aja might remake Pet Semetary. I find myself with very little to say about that. Huh.
--- After Zach Snyder makes his Superman movie with Henry "swoon" Cavill, he's lining up a movie called The Last Photograph which sounds more serious than what we're used to from him - it's set in "war-torn Afghanistan" and:"At last report Christian Bale is attached to play a war correspondent who is the only survivor of an attack on a group of Americans. Sean Penn would play a retired ex-special ops soldier determined to free a family member who has been kidnapped and the journalist agrees to travel the rough terrain to find them with him in exchange for the story."
--- Ben Foster will be playing John Gotti Jr. in that Gotti movie with John Travolta; we worried last week when Dominic Cooper was rumored up for the role, and now we're worried for Ben. Mitts off, Travolta!
--- Diablo Cody, who seems to be inexplicably-to-me hated these days more than she's liked, appears to be drawn to birds of a feather since she's apparently offered the co-lead in her directorial debut (previous post) to Russell Brand. These are both people I am always being forced to argue in favor of! This movie will drive me to knife-wielding!

And a happy 41st birthday to Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who can currently be seen playing incesty kid-tosser Jamie Lannister the Kingslayer on HBO's A Game of Thrones. Well not currently currently, since we're in between seasons, but you know what I mean. Have you guys seen the beard he's currently rocking?
Good god do I love a scruffy blond. I assume this is for the second season, where Jamie finds himself, um, cut off from shaving supplies. You'd think that a man with a jawline as blessedly pronounced as his would lose something by covering it up but nope, he still looks dropped from Mt. Olympus.
Anyway in honor of his birthday, I've assembled a good old-fashioned gratuitous post in his honor. Everybody have some sweet dreams last night? This has nothing to do with the above pictures of Jason and Hoyt making babies on this week's True Blood (via) - if that's a spoiler for you, it's also a damn incentive to catch your ass up - but I had a dream last night that my grandmother was throwing me a Game of Thrones themed birthday party! All I really remember though is the buffet table where there were all these jello molds in the colors and shapes of the various houses - a red lion jello for House Lannister, for example - oh and also there was this giant platter of grey meat that had the picture of a direwolf sitting behind it. That was gross.

Stayed up way past my bedtime last night in order to get there but I finally flipped the last page of George R. R. Martin's fifth installment in his A Song of Ice and Fire

I will say that I loved it, and it was one of my favorite volumes so far. Martin's language is so rich and fun and curious and strangely plotted - people who roll their eyes at him as just sorcerers and dragons and mead wenches with their tits popping out are really doing themselves a disservice. At this point in this series you're aching for certain goals to be reached and then he gets you so caught up in the way he discusses his character's relationships and contrasting mindsets that you will follow him anywhere, gladly. Unto the end of time apparently, because gods know when we'll get Book 6. Sigh. But yet I am so sated with the just-short-of-1000 pages I just read that I feel fine waiting a bit, mulling it all over. (Get back to me in a couple of years and I'll surely be singing a different tune, no doubt.)
ETA all this means that I'm now off reading every review and every fan-reaction there is to be found on the whole of the internet, so I will be hella distracted today and posting will probably be light.

The last thing I saw the beyond wonderful actress Carice Van Houten in - best known for being beyond wonderful in Paul Verhoeven's beyond wonderful film Black Book - was Christopher Smith's Black Death, where she played a sinister witch drunk on her own religion opposite Sean Bean. Why I couldn't see this giving-me-goosebumps news coming from that obviousness I have no idea. It was basically an audition for this. Via EW comes word she'll be playing Melisandre on HBO's A Game of Thrones!

The wonderful actor Stephen Dillane is playing Stannis, but I can't even think about that right now, so fucking beyond excited am I about Carice. Carice! My beloved Carice! She is going to be SO BEYOND AWESOME in this part you guys! I love everything about Melisandre, she's an incredible character, and this shit will be insane. --- Queen T - When the aliens come and ask us to take them to our leader, we've obviously got to make a beeline straight for Tilda Swinton's house.--- Soul Swallow - There is apparently actual forward momentum of the long-gestating Evil Dead remake. Via Slash we hear that Uruguayan director Federico Alvarez has been hired and there are production people heading to Detroit to work on it. Alvarez apparently got a lot of attention for a short film called Panick Attack! that he released online a couple of years ago, and you can watch it at the link. I haven't seen it. I just pity the poor fool that tries to fill Bruce Campbell's shoes.
--- Batception - DH collected up the three big posters of the day - ones for The Dark Knight Rises, The Thing remake (which has been sitting around gathering dust forever now), and Martin Scorsese's Hugo (sans Chabret).--- Weinstein Buttholes - Dimension Films is still owned by those Weinstein buttholes, isn't it? Ugh. They've snatched up the rights to Livid, the new film from the French director behind the awesomely disturbing fetus-snatcher movie Inside (reuniting him with Inside star Beatrice Dalle), which BD rightly deciphers to mean they'll mess the release all up, because they always do with horror movies.
--- Parrish The Panties - I don't watch Weeds, but I do watch videos of Hunter Parrish standing around in his underpants, even if he is trapped in a hamster ball.--- 8 Times Ice - I am up to page 60 in A Dance With Dragons! I am a slow reader, this book is a thousand pages long, it's gonna be awhile. But I actually lugged the giant thing on the subway with me today, and I normally can't read on the subway, it makes me dizzy. Point: I am willing to risk barf for GRRM. Speaking of him making me queasy, io9's got a couple choice quotes from a new interview (no spoilers, don't worry) where he admits the possibility that the Ice and Fire series could stretch into an 8th book instead of 7 at this point. SIGH. This series will be the death of us all.

--- Spy's Guys - Naomie Harris, the plucky lass so good in 28 Days Later, is Miss Moneypenny in the next James Bond film, which is great cuz we like her, but even better is word that Javier Bardem and Ralph Fiennes are pretty much locked in. Anyway I am going to have to demand a three-way between them and Daniel Craig. Demand! Wedge it in the plot somehow. They always find time for sexiness with James Bond somewhere. Maybe they can do it while on a helicopter that's on fire falling towards the ocean. Alright, where's my screenwriter credit?
--- Killa Thrilla - I haven't linked to the new trailer for Final Destination 5 yet because I heard it gives away absolutely everything to the movie from start to finish, and I ain't playin that. One of the most important characters in George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire book series that we haven't met yet on HBO's show is Brienne of Tarth, who is a physically imposing, oft described in incredibly unflattering terms looks-wise, lady-knight for Renly, King Robert's brother who we saw getting his manliness shaved off by that gleaming twink last season. Casting Brienne was always gonna be a challenge because of how she's described - she's enormous and freckled and just awkward looking (but under all that she's noble and loyal and just awesome as all get-out). Well they found their Brienne! Her name is Gwendoline Christie, and that's her up top.
GRRM talks about her here.What do we think? It almost seems dickish to say to the woman, "Hey I can totally see it!" But uh I can totally see it. Her only previous acting role according to was as "Classy Shopper" in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and the weird thing is it's been ages since I saw that movie just one time and I didn't even like it really but I can totally recall her scene. But then again LOOK AT HER:

--- Animal Rites - A writer's been hired to adapt Beasts of Burden, a comic book series about a bunch of talking animals that fight witches and demons, for a CG-animated adaptation. I just read the first collection of this series
a couple of weeks ago and they're a lot of fun and much darker than you might think from the description. This is no Scooby Doo. There's some real horror tucked up in here. Which is why I'm worried that it's a bunch of folks from Walden Media, the production house that's made an effort to create family-friendly spiritual-friendly entertainments like the Narnia series, that have their hands on the stories. There is a lot of room for error tone-wise here that could ruin the reason the series works in the first place.--- Still Siggyless - Lost's Damon Lindelof is one of the screenwriters for Ridley Scott's not-an-Alien-prequel Prometheus and he gave up a bunch of details the other day on what this whole "not-a-prequel" business actually means. Sounds promising in theory, although all his praise of Ridley Scott's "genius" is undercut by the steady string of godawful movies Ridley Scott has been responsible for over the past 20 years. Anyway Fassy!
--- Dewey Sliced - I hope everyone's been keeping up with Glenn's "Scream to Scream, Scene by Scene" series! He's made it to what he calls his "favorite scene in the entire trilogy," and you know, now that he says it I think it could be mine too. I remember the way I felt in the theater watching this scene - so helpless and horrified. Courtney Cox is phenomenal here. Plus, the second scariest pizza of all time!--- Fall Carnage - Slash rounds up some release date announcements of note: Steven Soderbergh's Contagion - his flick about a world-wide virus starring a cast of thousands! - will be out on Spetember 9th, a month and a half earlier than expected. Plus Roman Polanski's Carnage, his adaptation of the play God of Carnage with Kate Winslet and Jodie Foster and John C. Reilly and Christoph Waltz, is out in limited release on November 18th.
--- Miss July - I was just thinking the other day that it was about time for another installment of Low Resolution's Movie Preview, and poof a new one appears. I think perhaps I've got a mental clock devoted to them at this point. Never let me down, Joe. My sanity's built around these now. --- Call It 301- There is a chance that the director of Orphan might be directing the sequel to 300, which is awesome! But the film is now retitled from Xerxes to 300: Battle of Artemisia, which is awful.
--- Dead Mission - I'm so conflicted about Mission Impossible 4. It is the first live-action movie movie directed by Brad "The Incredibles" Bird, and it stars Jeremy Renner! If I could pretend that was where it ended I would be so excited! But it really for real stars Tom Cruise and Renner's just his sidekick or whatever, ugh. If they build their advertising campaign upon promises of Cruise's brutal death with Renner taking over the film & franchise, I will make it over the hump. PopWrap has the first teaser trailer.--- Whinny Whine - Listen, I grew up loving Steven Spielberg. I saw Jurassic Park in the theater 14 times. There aren't many movies that he's made that I dislike, even at this point. And perhaps my first impression will be misleading. Because this first trailer for War Horse is a pile of sentimental goo that I'm gonna be barfing up for a week. Maybe it's just the fact that I've never gotten "horse movies" - horse eyes creep me out. They're not as bad as cow's eyes, but they're up there. So mooning over a pet horse in movies always makes me sour.
--- Silent Snow - I'd mentioned awhile back that most of the cast of the original Silent Hill film - which is a bit of a curious mess but is genuinely creepy at times, as well as being visually spectacular and well-acted - were coming back for the sequel. What I hadn't noticed, since this was before HBO's A Game of Thrones had aired, was that Kit Harington, aka everybody's favorite emo-bastard Jon Snow, had joined the cast as well. He'll be co-starring with his TV papa Sean Bean! BD has a gallery of images from it.--- Big Bad - I've avoided spoilers as well as I could but I could've sworn that who the villain is in Joss Whedon's The Avengers had leaked awhile back? Perhaps not, like I said I was trying not to notice. Maybe it was discredited. Anyway io9 is listing their top 10 picks for who the villain ought to be, is the point.

--- An Impressive Phallus - Back in May I posted a couple of pictures of James Franco from his movie about the gay poet Hart Crane, as well as the news that there'd be "a love scene" between him and Michael Shannon in it - well I guess the film screened in LA and word on it (via K212) is even more explicit:"It features graphic sex scenes of "Franco-as-Hart ebulliently performing fellatio on what appears to be an impressive phallus" and "ecstatic as he is topped during anal sex,"

--- Mars Needs Men - JJ has a couple of shots of Colin Farrell looking like Colin Farrell (aka hot) in jeans and a t-shirt on the Canadian set of the Total Recall remake, which I guess means that movie's finally shooting. Huh.--- Little Person - Ian McShane is playing the head dwarf in Snow White and the Huntsman (that's the one with Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron, not the Julia Roberts one). The head dwarf is named Caesar, snooze - make him act all tough and regal and shit while pulling off a Dopey, dammit. That's acting.
--- Speaking of our current revisionist fairy tale craze, Guillermo Del Toro would love to make Maleficent, he says. He even busts out some dorky knowledge about the dragon's wings! God I love him. But the basic point stands that Guillermo Del Toro would love to make a million movies, but there is only one of him. So I won't hold my breath on that.
--- No Strangers 2 Strange - Bryan Bertino's successful 2008 horror film The Strangers has come up in my home a couple times these past weeks so I'm feeling inclined to hear what's up with its sequel; thankfully STYD got some news from Liv Tyler herself. Unfortunately it's not good news:"It's strange. I've read the script. It's been around the whole time, but I don't know how real it is," she said. "Bryan isn't directing it, I don't know what's happened with it. I didn't love the idea personally, but Bryan's such a good writer. He had another project that I was obsessed with and fell I love with and kept trying to convince them to not do 'The Strangers 2' but 'Let's go straight into this thing and it can be 'From the Makers of...' 'cause it was such a great, also simple story but absolutely terrifying. Someone else has that now and they've actually changed it quite a bit. Who knows? Hollywood is so confusing."

--- O Khaleesi - I still haven't gotten around to the Game of Thrones finale - tonight, tonight! - but you should check out Sean's recap of the episode alongside his friend Megan - Sena's read the books, she hasn't - to see a take on the first season from both perspectives. But only if you've seen the finale already!
