Doesn't that look so much better than anything you've seen advertising-wise for the new Planet of the Apes movie? I swear, why won't studios let me run them, I'd make them so much money.
Anyway whoops forgot to mention earlier this week that I'm off today through Tuesday! I know you guys need a lot of preparation to deal with my absence - medication, over-sized sunglasses, and what some might call excessive foot bathing is involved - so I apologize for springing this on you so suddenly. Send me the medical bills, I promise tomake myself a nest out of them totally care.

Alright smartassery aside I do have something for you - my weekly write-up of the weekend's new movie releases is up at Celebrity Beehive. There's nothing out this weekend that I much want to see (although I could probably be dragged to Rise of the Planet of the Apes for the air-conditioning) - we're just holding our breath for next Friday when Final Destination 5 comes out. (pics via) Well there are some shots from the set of the Sal Mineo bio-pic that James Franco is directing with Val Lauren seen there consistently half-naked as his Sal. We last spoke of this right here. I just... what is there to even say at this point? James is sucking dicks on-screen and making movies about every single gay man that ever lived... in a year he'll be sticking Anderson Cooper up his butt live on CNN and people will still be asking, "But is he gay?" I just don't know what to say about him anymore.

--- Swimming With Fassy - Michael Fassbender has joined every other Irishman actor in existence in the cast of Brendan Gleeson's adaptation of Flann O’Brien’s 1939 novel At-Swim-Two-Birds
. I am not familiar with this novel, but here's the world's briefest description:"The story follows a teenage student who populates his creative writing with important characters from his own life."
Has anyone read the book? I should read it probably, shouldn't I? The way all the articles speak of it I feel ashamed not being familiar with it actually. Me = flop.
--- Speaking o' Fassy, have you ever wondered what it'd be like to have sex with him? HA what a question. Well over at FF Simone points us in the direction of a burlesque performer's NSFW blog entry about her day spent shooting a (simulated, duh) threesome sex scene with him for the film Shame, his reunion with Hunger director Steve McQueen. Point of lurid interest:
"our scenes with Michael were totally intense! I'll just say that whoever he is dating (I heard its Zoe Kravitz), is most definitely not disappointed with his...er, manliness."
I mean, anybody who's seen Hunger knows this already (link NSFW), but it's always a welcome reminder.
--- Ze Plane - Apparently there was word via Twitter (a tweet which has since been deleted, so who knows) over the weekend that Dominic Cooper had joined the cast of a Hervé Villechaize bio-pic, which is starring Peter Dinklage (who looks nothing like Hervé, height aside). It's called My Dinner With Hervé and Cooper's apparently playing a journalist who interviews the Fantasy Island star about his life, which probably had more to it than shouting, "Ze plane, ze plane!" for a couple of years, right?--- Crazy Girl - I'd pretty much given up on bothering with seeing John Carpenter's The Ward, the reviews were so foul and Im so tired of watching the great horror directors losing this grip, but now that Pax has admitted to some appreciation for the film (save the ending, which apparently everyone agrees is most foul of all) I'm feeling more inclined than I had been.
--- Planet of the Rapes - James Franco would like you to know that he's not a gay rapist, thank you very much.--- Eyes Wide Shout - Glenn tells us all the movies he's seeing over the course of the Melbourne International Film Festival over the next couple of weeks. 59 movies! Egads. Bets of luck, man. That sounds painful. I mean, he's seeing all sorts of awesomeness - most jealous over Lars Von Trier's Meloncholia and Ti West's The Innkeepers, probably - so that'll help presumably. But that's a lot of stimuli for that amount of time.
--- Hour of the Wolf - Arbogast looks back at Brotherhood of the Wolf which is apparently ten years old - god that makes me feel old, that movies I saw here in NYC are having 10 year anniversaries now - and which I need to revisit myself having not seen it since.
--- Solar Flair - It's nothing new really if you're familiar with the books but in an interview at AICN with James Purefoy (mmm James Purefoy) they got him to talk a little bit about his character in John Carter (have they renamed it just JC yet?) and what the filming was like. A little bit."The character is called Kantos Kahn and he is the admiral of the Xavarin, which is a gigantic sort of ship. But in the John Carter world, these ships fly through the air and are powered by solar panels, so they go very, very fast when it’s very, very sunny, and they slow down a little bit when it’s cloudy."
There is more than that if you click over; I just liked that random comment - obviously this will play into the story at some point given in lieu of much more about his character. Oh he's a dude whose ship goes too slow sometimes. Acting!

--- An Impressive Phallus - Back in May I posted a couple of pictures of James Franco from his movie about the gay poet Hart Crane, as well as the news that there'd be "a love scene" between him and Michael Shannon in it - well I guess the film screened in LA and word on it (via K212) is even more explicit:"It features graphic sex scenes of "Franco-as-Hart ebulliently performing fellatio on what appears to be an impressive phallus" and "ecstatic as he is topped during anal sex,"
Indeed! James Franco is dedicated. (To being awesome.) There's an interview about the film with James at that second link. The film will supposedly come out next year.
--- Kill Bots - Steven Spielberg's supposedly going to make a movie out of it, but the new book Robopocalypse
hadn't even been seen by the general public yet. Til now - it's out, and io9 says it is awesome. I just finished a book and need something to pick up and this sounds awfully perfect for June reading. Killer robots ho!

--- Mars Needs Men - JJ has a couple of shots of Colin Farrell looking like Colin Farrell (aka hot) in jeans and a t-shirt on the Canadian set of the Total Recall remake, which I guess means that movie's finally shooting. Huh.--- Little Person - Ian McShane is playing the head dwarf in Snow White and the Huntsman (that's the one with Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron, not the Julia Roberts one). The head dwarf is named Caesar, snooze - make him act all tough and regal and shit while pulling off a Dopey, dammit. That's acting.
--- Speaking of our current revisionist fairy tale craze, Guillermo Del Toro would love to make Maleficent, he says. He even busts out some dorky knowledge about the dragon's wings! God I love him. But the basic point stands that Guillermo Del Toro would love to make a million movies, but there is only one of him. So I won't hold my breath on that.
--- No Strangers 2 Strange - Bryan Bertino's successful 2008 horror film The Strangers has come up in my home a couple times these past weeks so I'm feeling inclined to hear what's up with its sequel; thankfully STYD got some news from Liv Tyler herself. Unfortunately it's not good news:"It's strange. I've read the script. It's been around the whole time, but I don't know how real it is," she said. "Bryan isn't directing it, I don't know what's happened with it. I didn't love the idea personally, but Bryan's such a good writer. He had another project that I was obsessed with and fell I love with and kept trying to convince them to not do 'The Strangers 2' but 'Let's go straight into this thing and it can be 'From the Makers of...' 'cause it was such a great, also simple story but absolutely terrifying. Someone else has that now and they've actually changed it quite a bit. Who knows? Hollywood is so confusing."

--- O Khaleesi - I still haven't gotten around to the Game of Thrones finale - tonight, tonight! - but you should check out Sean's recap of the episode alongside his friend Megan - Sena's read the books, she hasn't - to see a take on the first season from both perspectives. --- Song Bird - James Franco is releasing an album. I'd thought he learned his lesson from the Oscars. I guess not.
--- This Bites - Sharks are the new Truman Capotes! Stale Popcorn offers up the trailers for the similarly plotted (or should I say "plotted") Bait 3D and Shark Night 3D, the latter which is so abysmal a trailer I've refrained from commenting upon it yet. It's from the director of Final Destination 2 and has murderous sharks in three-dee - I should be commenting upon it!--- Frosty Reception - Joe offers up ten thoughts on X-Men: Muppet Babies, all of which sound sound to my ears if I might be ever so slightly less enthusiastic. But I wholeheartedly agree with his endorsement of January Jones take on Emma Frost, as well as the striking resemblance between Banshee and Ron Weasley, which kept freaking me out.
--- Jonze-ing - Spike Jonze's new animated short film will be playing before every movie for the next two weeks at the IFC Center here in NY. Shame that this is what it takes to maybe force me to see the new Godard movie, but there it is.

--- Action Figures - The only reason I'm bothering posting the news that Dwayne Johnson's joining the cast of the next GI Joe movie is so's we can all take a moment, close our eyes, and picture him and Channing Tatum working up a sweat on the film set's personal gym and then hitting the showers, et cetera... et cetera... what was I talking about again?--- Two By Two - Darren Aronofsky really wants to make his Noah and the Ark movie next, apparently. I will take whatever he wants to give me, so okay. Robes and sandals and two of every animal it is.
--- Re Up - Chris O'Dowd, who won our hearts and therefore our loins with his adorable accented police officer in Bridesmaids, has joined the cast of Judd Apatow's Knocked Up spin-off movie. But then, so has Charlene Yi.--- Slave Wrangler - It's looking more and more like Leonardo Dicaprio will take the role of the lead villain in Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained, while it's looking less and less like WIll SMith will take the lead role of Django.
--- Space Jockeys - For a good long while Jake Gyllenhaal was attached to Doug Liman's Moon movie - he disassociated himself from the project awhile ago since the film was taking forever to get off the ground, and went and made his sci-fi movie Source Code instead. But Liman's movie has now gotten a green-light says DH, it's now called Luna, and the names rumored for Jake's one-time role are Bradley Cooper, Chris Evans, Andrew Garfield, Emile Hirsch and Chris Pine. Cast them all and then just eliminate all wardrobe budget!
--- Not So Shy Shia - Shia Labeouf is taking the Transformers 3 press rounds as an opportunity to tell us that a fifth Indiana Jones movie is very close to happening. He's also taking the moment to get photographed with his shirt off as you see there, which I appreciate slightly more. I mean I'm not a Case of Crystal Pepsi hater like most folks; I just have my own specially arranged priorities.--- Pride Kills - As blessedly happens every June, Billy Loves Stu's going all out for Gay Pride Month and posting delights every day, like several recent interviews with gay horror folk - go forth and read, yo. --- Bust A Ghost - I am going to take this rare opportunity to encourage a remake of a film I love... probably just because it's early and I'm not quite myself yet. No, this is positive. Vulture's reporting that MGM wants to have David Lindsay-Abaire, the playwright behind Rabbit Hole, write a script for their long-rumored Poltergeist remake. Better still, they're not imposing any story limitations on him, meaning he could come up with a story all his own and they'd just lazily slap the name Poltergeist on it, I guess. Whatever, he hasn't even taken the job yet, so who knows. But in the same article they mention they're also working on a Carrie remake and that's so offensive I can't even.--- Shield V Skull - io9's got a new TV commercial for Captain America, which apparently hasn't come out yet? I really feel like I already saw it. Huh.

--- Dark Tidings - Via STYD there's the hi-res version of the poster for Don't Be Afraid of the Dark. Why no giant floating Katie Holmes head? Or at least giant floating Guy Pearce ass?--- My Magneto - I'm trying to decide if I'm going to see X-Men Muppet Babies tonight or tomorrow morning. My excitement for it begs for the closest time-slot manageable, while my aversion to Friday night movie crowds whispers otherwise into my ear. Either way, it will be mine, Fassy and all, within the next 24 hours! Whoop! That film and the next couple weeks of Summer releases are covered in Joe's most recent Movie Preview post over at Low Resolution. Check it.
--- How Hungry Are You - Somehow I never got around to mentioning this, but apparently Lionsgate is considering turning the three-book Hunger Games series into four films, should the first movie be a success. Hrm. Lord knows I love 'em, but I'm not entirely sold on this. But I'm easily won over. (Make the third film nothing but Finnick in his skimpy aquatic costume posing for two hours, and I'm yours!) (pic via)--- And speaking of Katniss & Co, PopWrap got to chat up Jennifer Lawrence today - it's mostly about her role as Mystique in X-Men Muppet Babies as well as her recently discovered talk-show agility - a girl who can charm Letterman so has a big future in the biz - but there's some Hunger-flavored manna towards the end.
--- More Than Meets The Eye - PopWrap dissects some recent comments by Shia Labeouf on the departure of Megan Fox from the Transformers series, and I feel like I'm the last person standing defending Megan Fox - even Mickey Rourke has jumped ship, as if he's got a leg to stand on - but there does seem to be a somewhat mangled attempt at defending her by Shia, so good on him.
--- His Song - The Film Experience is celebrating Moulin Rouge Week, and while I don't really have much to say about that movie, I can appreciate other's enthusiasms for it. (I've got a love-hate thing with it, personally. I like a lot, but sometimes it just gives me a fucking headache.) Anyway my favorite aspect of it is Ewan, so Nat's Top Ten list of Ewan's greatest performances is right up my alley. Ewan forever.--- Monkey Business - It's amazing what a surfeit of anticipation the Rise of the Planet for the Apes movie I've got at this point. I realized this morning that I never even got around to watching the first trailer, and now we've got a second one. Nothing against Jimmy Franco of course; should we lay the blame at Tim Burton's feet? (Of course we should.) I guess if nothing else it's giving Andy Serkis a new opportunity to shine, hidden in the shadows. You don't have to hide Andy in the shadows, ya know, world? Sometimes we like to look at him just plenty.
--- Who You Callin Fairy - I feel guilty at this point eleven years later still referring to Mary Harron as "the director of American Psycho," but that is and remains where I fell in love with her work. (I feel no such qualms about illustrating this only tangentially related bit of news with a picture of Christian Bale in that film, because duh.) She went on to make the terrific The Notorious Bettie Page after that, and did a lot of TV work, but it's hard out there for female directors, as y'all well know. Her most recent flick, the girl's boarding school vampire movie The Moth Diaries (with Scott Speedman playing a teacher!) remains in limbo right now, but according to BD there is good news: she's lining up another flick. It's called Wicked Lovely and it's based on a series of books about a girl that gets caught up in some faery netherworld... that happened to me once. With sexy results!--- And finally, Jared Leto done went and cleaned himself up some for a Huge Boss cologne commercial, so sure, I'll post it. He cleans up well. (via)

Vanity Fair has got a gallery of pictures of James Franco on the set of The Broken Tower, the bio-pic of the poet Hart Crane he's directing and starring in, which is worth checking out just to stare at James of course, but most enticing is the caption that's attached to this picture...
... which reads: "The Brooklyn Bridge lit for a love scene between Franco and Michael Shannon, seen through their window."

--- Poof There He Is - STYD has got a look at David Tennant in his role of the Vegas-ish magician in the Fright Night remake. Dare I say it's sort of... sexy? In a really weird way? Oh I am ashamed. I just get blinded by chest fur every time. Anyway Colin and Toni aside this movie is gonna be awful, I think.--- Natural Selection - Paranormal Activity director Oren Peli's follow-up film, the alien-themed Area 51, hasn't even come out yet but he's lining up what he'll do next. It is "the tale of friends who discover they are not alone after they become stranded in a ghost town overrun by nature." Whatever the eff that means.
--- How Many Makers - I love this listicle at The Film Experience on the working habits of the many directors we love. Would that nearly every single name on the list work more. I don't care. I want it all!
--- Multi-Fassy-ed - io9 dissects a new TV bite-sized trailer for X-Men Muppet Babies that's got a bunch of new moments in it, including a suspicious one involving Michael Fassbenders. That "s" is meant to be there.--- People Pets - I apparently spaced on posting this news earlier this week so here it is briefly, which doesn't mesh with how epic the news is but whatever, it's been two days and the world's moved on already! Darren Aronofsky and George Clooney are perhaps probably maybe teaming up for a sci-fi movie about a man who wakes up from his cryogenic slumber to find that the human race has been turned into pets for another species. Seems like people are actually tackling harder-edged old-fashioned sci-fi themes these days, doesn't it? I like it.

--- Sally Boy - James Franco has cast his Sal Mineo for that biopic he's apparently making - his name's Val Lauren, and he's mostly done TV work so far, although his IMDb bio says he's done a lot of "play originals" with Scott Caan. Mmhmm. I've heard that about Scott. Anyway that's him to the left there and I guess he could look the part, with some effort. If we're looking at later-years Sal, that is.--- Queen of the Knight - Marion Cotillard says that her part in The Dark Knight Rises is very small and non-challenging for a lady who will be tremendously pregnant when it comes time for her to film.
